Don't Paint Me A Hero: Decorated WWII Paratrooper Shares His Story

By Linda Fudala-Tucker

With the strong admonishment not to paint him a hero, Gerry Durandetto of Port Charlotte decided that finally it was all right to share his World War II story with a reporter. His wife Kay, was nearby, as she had been when they exchanged wedding vows more than 60 years ago, her husband’s head still bandaged, an eye missing.

Boca Grande Chamber Adopts Slate of New Officers for 2005-06 Christmas Walk is Nov. 26

By Linda Fudala-Tucker

The annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk is being called a Holiday Walk this year because it's being held on Nov. 26, the Saturday after Thanksgiving; not because of any pressure to be politically correct, say Chamber board members.

The Chamber board met Tuesday to discuss the Nov. 26 event and adopt the slate of new officers recommended by a nominating committee and welcome new board member, Carol Lockett. New offi-

cers include: Johns Knight, president; Pat Oberg, vice president; Leslie Diaz, secretary; Judy Morrison, treasurer; and Dave McHugh, past president.

Setting the date for the annual holiday downtown event for Nov. 26 coincides with the Boca Grande Art Alliance Art Show being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Johann Fust Community Library. The Walk is slated for 5 to 8 p.m. A leter

from the Chamber encourages downtown merchants to deck the halls for the event and offer refreshments to visitors. "This is an event for the merchants," said Craig Lutz, executive director.

"I think having the two events together will bring more people out, and I think it should work out okay for both organizations," said Carlene Stewart, executive director for the BG Art Alliance.

Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce 2005-06 board of directors and officers include back row: Sandy Burkhart, board member; Johns Knight, president; Craig Lutz, executive director. Front row: Patricia Oberg, vice president; Leslie Diaz, secretary; Judy Morrison, treasurer; Dave McHugh, past president; and Carol Lockett, new board member.
