Perkins, librarian at the Johann Fust Community Library since
2002, turned in her resignation Monday afternoon.
"It was the most difficult decision I've
ever had to make," said Perkins, who cited several reasons
for her decision. "I'm leaving to be able to have more
flexibility in my schedule to pursue some creative outlets; to
set up a studio to make jewelry; do some freelance work; and to
help out my mom. It's not a decision I made lightly. The library
has been my life."
Perkins said she was honored to have worked at
the library. "It was a great honor to work there," she
said. "I'm very proud of what was accomplished, the new
children's programs; membership has doubled; and the library has
become more user friendly. We were so far from the center of
town, but now the library has become part of the whole
community." |
An active community volunteer on
many fronts, Perkins said she had no plans to leave the island
and would be continuing many of her volunteer activities.
Cotton Hanley, board president of the library,
said in a press release sent out on Tuesday that Perkins'
resignation was accepted "with regret and deep appreciation
for her services to the library and the community." Hanley
went on to say "Ms. Perkins' resignation will take effect
when her successor is selected." A search committee is in
the process of being assembled with the goal of finding a
candidate by the Spring 2006.
Hanley outlined Perkin's history at the
library which began 8 years ago when she became the assistant to
the late Pansy Cost, first librarian who had served in the
