Difficult Decision Leaves Vacancy at Johann Fust Community Library

By Linda Fudala-Tucker

Beth Perkins, librarian at the Johann Fust Community Library since 2002, turned in her resignation Monday afternoon.

"It was the most difficult decision I've ever had to make," said Perkins, who cited several reasons for her decision. "I'm leaving to be able to have more flexibility in my schedule to pursue some creative outlets; to set up a studio to make jewelry; do some freelance work; and to help out my mom. It's not a decision I made lightly. The library has been my life."

Perkins said she was honored to have worked at the library. "It was a great honor to work there," she said. "I'm very proud of what was accomplished, the new children's programs; membership has doubled; and the library has become more user friendly. We were so far from the center of town, but now the library has become part of the whole community."

An active community volunteer on many fronts, Perkins said she had no plans to leave the island and would be continuing many of her volunteer activities.

Cotton Hanley, board president of the library, said in a press release sent out on Tuesday that Perkins' resignation was accepted "with regret and deep appreciation for her services to the library and the community." Hanley went on to say "Ms. Perkins' resignation will take effect when her successor is selected." A search committee is in the process of being assembled with the goal of finding a candidate by the Spring 2006.

Hanley outlined Perkin's history at the library which began 8 years ago when she became the assistant to the late Pansy Cost, first librarian who had served in the position for over 50 years. Perkins became librarian in 2002 follow-

Eight Katrina Survivors Find a Haven with a Relative in Florida

By Linda Fudala-Tucker

A search on the Internet brought together family members dispersed by the winds and floods of Hurricane Katrina and brought them to the home of Patty and Danny Gillis of East Englewood.

The group of eight are Danny's relatives who were all living in St. Bernard Parish, LA with their two dogs, Babee and Rocky, when Katrina hit. More than a week later, with little more than the clothes on their backs, they were scattered in several states.

By Linda Fudala-Tucker

Using their own money to rent a van, Bill and Dee Sargent and friend, Cara Castle spent a weekend taking donated supplies to Katrina ravaged Mississippi where makeshift pet shelters have been erected. The Suncoast Humane Society is sending a van of supplies today.

Bill Sargent of St. Petersburg is the son of Ruth Sargent, recording secretary for the Boca Grande Community Planning Panel. She also

serves as secretary to the Boca Grande Clinic Foundation. The following is the email she received from her son and daughter in- law following their trip to Hattiesburg, Miss.
