| The
students of the Island School were primed and ready to start
classes Monday, at least that's
how Reed Sligar felt.
Reed is in fifth grade, and only
one of two in his class. "I
really enjoy coming to school here. It's
just great," he
said. Last year the school had two "first
days" of
classes because of Hurricane Charley. Reed said he didn't
even want to think about that now. "I
hate hurricanes," he
said.
The teachers, including Michele
Boyum, Melissa Trail, Ori Boyum, and Karen Kelley, assistant
seemed primed as well and were joined by curriculum specialist
from Orange County, Brian Glantz who works in conjunction with
the education program of the University of Central Florida.
" I
came down the first year of the Island School and it really has
become a great charter school,"
said Glantz. "It
serves this island well."
Glantz said he along with Carolyn
Hopp and Marcia Halpin travel all over Florida as curriculum
consultants. "The
bottom line in teaching is the kids...you can't
set curriculum from the top down, it has to be from the bottom
up...the academic needs of the children have to come first and
the Island School is a great example of this. And this team has
been |
|
together for three years,
along with the great community involvement, it 's
just a wonderful school this community should be proud
of."
