Turtle Nesting Environmental Code
Violation Goes to Hearing
Shore Lane residence cited for lights
on the beach
| By Linda Fudala-Tucker
Floodlights on the beach at a residence at 4037 Shore Lane have been cause for numerous written warnings over the 2005 turtle nesting season, but to no avail, says a Lee County senior environmental planner. So, the matter will go to hearing on Oct. 3, in Fort Myers, but not before a final inspection on Oct. 2, said Carol Lis, senior environmental planner in charge of environmental code violations for Lee County. "The letters we've sent to the property owners have included alternative lighting options. Floodlights projecting onto the beach are very detrimental to hatchling turtles, which can be diverted away from the Gulf and die," said Lis. |
Flood lights that shine on the beach at this Lake Shore residence have violated environmental codes. After repeated warnings, including a certified letter, the matter now faces a hearing on Oct. 3. |
It's the first time on the island, at least the Lee County side, that an environmental lighting code violation has been taken this far, said Grace Harvey, head of the Gasparilla Island Turtle Patrol, and holder of the state license to monitor and excavate.
