Andy Nagle provided the Gasparilla Inn's Beach Club venue and hors d'oeuvres. Boca Grande provided the heart.

One hundred thirty seven bidders raised over $27,000 for "Deepwater" Dave Howell's cancer treatments buying all 116 donated items at premium prices.

The total was boosted when almost a dozen bidders responded with $100 each to auctioneer Ron Thompson’s appeal for cash donations. Another $1,205 filled the "gift jar" at the registration table. A

50-50 drawing raising $1840 ended with the winner, Bob Melvin, donating his 50% back to the effort. All contributed to the auction being an "overwhelming success" with a "mind-boggling" total, according to Lennie Tatko and Beverly Futado, event organizers.

Several island children helped raise the total by offering to teach surfing, jewelry making and more. The youngsters joined Island full-timers, seasonal residents and businesses in contributing a wide range of items. There were fishing trips with the local guides who seem always

ready to pitch in and help with worthy causes. Vacation time in island homes and a legendary Maine inn were offered. Restaurant meals and
in-home cooking by a "personal"
chef for the night attracted more bidding. A 1/2 hour flight for 3 with Boca Grande Seaplane's Mark Futch was bought by -- another pilot.

It took the volunteer efforts of many people to accomplish a successful fund-raising evening and the extraordinary efforts of Lennie and Beverly to bring it all together.

Get on the Bus!
Residents Organize Against Tax to Rid the Island of Iguanas

By Linda Fudala-Tucker

Momentum is building in a grass roots effort to organize a contingency to oppose a tax that would be used to eradicate the iguana population on the island that has grown to an estimated 10,000.

Lee County Commissioners are holding a hearing on the matter on March 14, 5 p.m. in Fort Myers and residents against the tax are expected to show up en masse thanks to the effort of island resident, Bonnie McGee who has reserved a 50-passenger bus for the meeting.

"I just think there needs to be warm bodies at that hearing to show commissioners that a lot of people here think there are other ways to deal with the issue without another tax," she said. "I can get a

  second bus if need be."

Tom McKenzie is also against the tax and will be there as well. He wants a question answered: "Why are federal funds dedicated to the eradication of other invasive species and not this species?"

"(Commissioner Bob) Janes has said it is a locality situation unique to Boca Grande. Well, those iguanas are certainly going to cross the causeway if they haven't already done so," said McKenzie. "The

It only takes a trap like this to capture the Mexican spiny tail iguana. Island resident Bill Snare claims to have trapped over 150 of them.
