Bike Parade and Woman's Club Fair Bring Out A Crowd
By Linda Fudala-Tucker
The floats were elaborate and the Boca Grande Community Center grounds were packed with folks both young and old on a perfect sunny day.

The 21st Annual Bike Parade had 42 registered units, said Dee Wheeler, organizer, who said she didn’t remember a year when they were more elaborate or populated.

"There were 175 participation ribbons given out," she said.

The judges were just about stymied when a solution to name the 12 best floats with six blue ribbon winners and six honorable mentions came to the rescue. "They were all winners," said Dee. (See a winners list on page 18 and Dee's letter on page 19.)

The Boca Grande Woman's Club Fair was jammed especially the multipurpose room where casseroles and baked goodies were selling at premium prices. The book sale was no less attended. The games were enjoyed by scores of youngsters and volunteers worked themselves into a joyful delirium just trying to keep up. Hot dogs, brats , and hamburgers fresh off the grill topped it all off.

Future Bridge Alternatives Discussed at GIBA Meeting
By Jim Tucker
Nine or ten residents joined Barrier Island Water Authority representatives at the "engineering meeting" hosted by the bridge authority last Thursday. The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority reviewed three alternatives to replace the aging Center and South Bridges. These two spans have shorter remaining service lives than the North (Swing) Bridge. The estimated remaining time frame for the South Bridge is only 6-10 years because of chloride contamination and erosion. The South Bridge also has the shallowest pilings and is getting close attention now to avoid expensive, temporary repairs. The Center Bridge has 12-15 years of estimated service life left, explained Jim Cooper, GIBA executive director. The alternative that would have restricted traffic on and off the island to one-lane for 9-12 months was eliminated from consideration. Congestion and the impediment to emergency traffic were the prime reasons to discard that plan.

The remaining alternatives involve offsetting the new construction from

Lee County Seeks Applicants for MSTU Advisory Committee
By Linda Fudala-Tucker
Applicants are being sought for a five-member Gasparilla Island MSTU advisory committee. And they don't have to fill out a financial disclosure form, said Nan Summerall Gonzalez, executive assistant to Lee County Commissioner Bob Janes.

The advisory committee is a "Non Reporting Committee" and therefore, the members will not have to file financial disclosures, explained Gonzalez.

The committee is made up of 5 property owners within the district. It is not a requirement, but preferred that the appointees be available at least 10 months out of the
